Will Kuntz

Director of Player Relations

Major League Soccer (MLS)

"A Comparative Analysis of the Labor Markets for Professional Athletes"

This presentation will focus on the differences in Player acquisition between Major League Baseball (MLB) and Major League Soccer (MLS). Soccer's global presence creates issues for MLS that are unique among its domestic league counterparts, as multiple leagues throughout the world are capable of offering multi-million dollar contracts to players in a market that is entirely unregulated. The single-entity structure of MLS further distinguishes itself from other leagues, and provides both strategic challenges and opportunities for a league that is still nascent.

Will Kuntz is Director of Player Relations for Major League Soccer, where he helps develop strategic initiatives for the League, manages salary budgets and negotiates contracts for MLS Clubs. He was also a member of the MLS team that negotiated the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the MLS Players Union prior to the start of the 2015 season.

Prior to joining MLS, Mr. Kuntz was the Pro Scouting Manager for the New York Yankees from 2011 to 2013. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing the Pro Scouting Department and directing the scouting coverage of Major and Minor League players, in addition to performing special scouting assignments. He joined the Pro Scouting Department in 2007 as an assistant after serving the same role in the Baseball Operations during the 2006 season. Kuntz first joined the Yankees as a Baseball Operations summer intern reporting to General Manager Brian Cashman in 2003, a role that he repeated in the summers of 2004 and 2005 before being hired full-time.

Mr. Kuntz was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2014 after graduating from the Fordham University School of Law, which he attended at night from 2009 through 2012. He attended undergrad at Williams College where he was a 4-year member of the varsity basketball team and a captain for the 2005-2006 season.
