“The Renewed Surge in Food Commodity Prices”
There has been a large and rapid increase in many food commodity prices during the last year. Many of the same long-term trends and short-run shock factors that contributed to this recent surge in prices also played a role in previous price spikes. The recent 2010-11 price surge followed unusually closely behind the 2007-08 price spike and raises concerns about food security and the possibility that world agricultural supply and demand relationships may have fundamentally changed.
