Tokyo City University JAPAN

The Embassy of Japan, along with the National Economists Club cordially invites you to attend this presentation:

"A Well-Functioning Labor Market Should be the Most Effective Safety-Net:

The Implication of Modern Technology for Growth and Deflation”

Recent technology is increasingly replacing human skills rather than legs and hands by machines. While our working life is becoming longer, the life expectancy of skills is becoming shorter, leading to a risk of skill obsolescence within one generation, resulting in weak consumption. This tendency is distinct in Japan, where a large wage-gap between regular/non-regular workers provides a strong incentive for such innovation and cost-cutting competition. Labor market seems to be the key for revitalization of developed economies.

Dr. Omori is currently Chief Professor, Graduate School of Environmental and Information Studies, Tokyo City University in Japan. He held various positions in both public and private sectors, including International Economic Advisor to the Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy, and Vice President of the Economic and Social Research Institute of the Cabinet Office of Japan, Chief Economist at UBS Securities Japan, Chair of APEC Economic Committee, Vice-Chair of Economic Policy Committee of the OECD, and Professor of Osaka University.  Dr. Omori received D.Phil. in Economics from Oxford University and B.A. in Engineering from University of Tokyo. He has written extensively in the area of economic policy, statistics, social capital, innovation and labor market issues.
